It's a Christmas Miracle as well as Episode 18! Gary Hockin (@geeh) and Chris Tankersley (@dragonmantank) decide to talk about the 2017 Game Awards, which neither of them watched but have strong opinions about.
They go over each category, discuss the merits of each game, and whether or not the winner should have been the winner. Do you agree with them? Are they full of bollocks? Is that the right way to use that word? Because the writer of this paragraph is not British. You can see the full list of nominees and winners here.
From bad saving, to escort missions, to cut scenes you cannot skip. Gary and Chris spend roughly an hour complaining about various tropes and mechanics in games that annoy everyone. Plus Gary is just a grumpy old man.
We already knew Gary hates farming, but did you know he hates Microtransactions and lootboxes? I did, but now we have it in audio form! Come listen to us talk about some games we like, and even a bit more about PUBG.
It's Episode 15, and the year anniversary of the podcast! Gary Hockin (@geeh) and Chris Tankersley (@dragonmantank) catch up on some of the games they have been playing. There's some old, some new, but I'm pretty sure nothing borrowed or blue. Who the hell rents games nowadays?
Thank the Elder Gods, it's Episode 14! With the failure of Episode 13 behind them, Chris Tankersley and Gary Hockin talk about some of the games that were announced at E3 2017. Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, and Bethesda have their announcements picked over and discussed.
And yes, it's Ori and the Will of the Wisps. I'm an idiot and wrote our show notes wrong.
Just skip past Episode 13, it's full of technical difficulties. Chris Tankersley and Gary Hockin just wanted to talk about some of the games they have been playing lately, but the internet had different plans. The audio quality of the episode gets pretty bad near the end, so feel free to skip over to Episode 14, which is much better sounding.
Despite Chris's lazyness, it is Episode 12! Chris Tankersley and Gary Hockin chat it up about Nintendo's new console, the Switch. Both of them have done horrible, unspeakable things (like live in rural Ohio) to get their hands on a Switch, and they absolutely love it. Mostly. Listen to find out their likes and dislikes.
OOOOOHHHH YEEAAAAAHHHH! Welcome to Episode 11! Chris Tankersley and Gary Hockin spend an entire episode talking about video games (spoilers: most video games are fake events) that are created to play a fake sport (spoilers: it's professional wrestling). Professional Wrestling games have been around about as long as video games themselves, and a whole bunch of them are discussed. They did try to keep the insider jokes to a minimum though.
Both are massive smarks.
Welcome to Episode 10! Gary Hockin and Chris Tankersley go back to playing with Legos as they talk about Minecraft. It's a game that both of them love, and they talk about the game all the way from it's humble beginnings in the age before "early access" all the way to the myriad of releases its had.
Back in Gary's day, he had to jump uphill to the next platform both ways on his ZX Spectrum. That's a good enough joke right? Gary's old.
There's also a bit of talk about some board games, for those of you that are interested in that.
And yes, the end of the episode does have some audio issues. We are really sorry :(
We also learn that Chris wants to be a garbage man, and Gary wants to be a Space Marine. What else do we learn on this episode?
Episode six is a thing! With a guest even! Chris Tankersley and Gary Hockin are joined by Chuck Reeves (@MANCHUCK), who had previously been banished to the back wall during our WoW episode. He's probably played Civilization about as much as we have, so we let him come on and talk with us about it (and so that he'd stop asking to be on).
Civilization was one of the defining games of the 4X genre, and it is one of the franchises to last decades. We discuss the history of the Civilization franchise and talk a bit about each of the games.
Episode five is now live! Chris Tankersley and Gary Hockin are joined by Ed Finkler (@funkatron), someone who is way better at video gaming than Gary, and we somehow suckered people into attending live. This time around we reminisce about all of the Fallout games (except Tactics. No one should talk about Tactics) and what we love and hate about them. Spoilers - we don't like some of the aspects of the games.
Thank you to everyone who came out to watch us record, and all of our listeners, and thank you to php|architect and One For All Events for giving us space at php[world] to record, and to SiteGround for providing us with some drinks.
Our fourth episode, and first live podcast, and we're already playing in Vegas! Chris Tankersley and Gary Hockin are joined by good friends Joe Ferguson (@JoePFerguson), Sara Golemon (@SaraMG), Sammy Powers (@SammyK), and a live studio audience. We manage to stay on track pretty much the entire time and barely talk about PHP internals, and let our guests reminisce over their drug, I mean MMO, of choice. We recount the expansions and how WoW turned into what it is today.
Thank you to everyone who came out to watch us record, and all of our listeners, and thank you to Zend for giving us space at ZendCon to record!
On this episode, we throw the old format out the window already and talk about the SimCity franchise, our favorite installments that are contained within, and we reminisce about the Roller Coaster Tycoon series. Gary also says some words about the new Duke Nukem game too. I think. I wasn't paying attention. Oh, and some Civilization. ALL GLORY TO ROME.
On this episode, we promise not to turn the podcast into a wrestling podcast, discuss our love of games where we run people over with cars, and Gary confesses that he is rubbish at video games. There is more stuff too, so listen to find out!
